Traditional Territories

Duke's Landing is situated on the traditional and unceded territories of several First Nations, including the Hul'qumi'num People (Cowichan Tribes, Lyackson First Nation, Halalt First Nation, Ts'uubaa-satx Nation, Stz'uminus First Nation and Penelakut Tribe), and the W̱SÁNEĆ People (the Tsartlip, Tsawout, Malahat, Pauquachin, and Tseycum First Nations) all of whom have a relationship with the land and waters from time immemorial that continues to this day.

Hul'qumi'num People

Archaeological evidence ties these peoples to southeastern Vancouver Island as far back as 4,500 years, while historical memory links them to the region since time immemorial. The Treaty Group represents the six Hul'qumi'num-speaking First Nations and is part of the larger group known as the Coast Salish People. Explore more about each Nation by visiting the links below.

W̱SÁNEĆ People 

The W̱SÁNEĆ People are Salt Water People, the Sea was very important to their way of life. Traditionally the W̱SÁNEĆ People had homes throughout the San Juan Islands and on the east and north coasts of the Saanich Peninsula. SENĆOŦEN is the language of the W̱SÁNEĆ people and belongs to the Coast Salishan language family. Explore more about each of the five bands by visiting the links below.
